Implementing a safety management system in Design, Manufacturing and Maintenance Organizations

SM-0001 is a Standard intended to enable the aerospace industry to implement a Safety Management System (SMS) consistent with ICAO Annex 19 – Safety Management. It can be used to support demonstration of compliance with applicable SMS requirements from Civil Aviation Authorities or for proactive voluntary SMS implementation to promote international product acceptance.

This Standard was developed in collaboration with The Aerospace and Defense Association of Europe (ASD), Aerospace Industries Association of America (AIA), Aerospace Industries Association of Brazil (AIAB), the Aerospace Industries Association of Canada (AIAC) and the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) and Transport Canada (TCCA).

In advance of a comprehensive regulatory regime for SMS in Canada, SM-0001 provides a framework for Canadian companies to implement SMS on a voluntary basis within their TCCA approved design, manufacturing and maintenance organizations.
